Perplexity launches Teammates AI agents for ongoing work

Perplexity has introduced Teammates, AI agents designed for ongoing work rather than a single prompt. A teammate can be assigned to monitor competitors, organize customer inquiries or prepare a briefing before meetings. According to Perplexity, it plans actions, uses connected tools and continues working on a project.

Teammates are initially available to Perplexity Max subscribers on the web; the company says iOS support is coming. The Decoder puts the Max subscription at $200 a month. Check current terms and credit usage before subscribing.

From a single prompt to ongoing work

In a normal chat, you ask a question, get an answer and send another request if needed. With Teammates, the user describes a continuing responsibility, the expected output and when the agent should act. For example, it can track competitors' prices and send a weekly summary.

For individual assignments, Teammates use Perplexity Computer, an AI agent that breaks complex tasks into steps and uses tools to complete them. Computer might gather information and prepare a report; a teammate can organize that work regularly and keep following the project.

Perplexity says teammates can collaborate with each other. Its changelog says they use the user's skills, memory and connected tools, and can message coworkers in Slack. The Decoder reports that each teammate has its own virtual machine with a desktop and browser.

The company offers other examples: a support teammate could group requests, draft responses and follow fixes, while an operations teammate could watch deadlines and missing documents. These are described use cases, not guarantees that the system will complete every task correctly without supervision.

Getting started

Perplexity says users can select Teammates in the web app, name an agent, connect tools and describe its responsibilities. The listed integrations include Slack, GitHub and Gmail; users can choose which GitHub repositories an agent may access. They can then assign it to a project and give it an initial task.

Before connecting work services, decide which data the agent needs and review the available access limits. Outputs and actions still need human review: an agent can misunderstand an instruction or work from incomplete context.

It helps to specify the schedule, sources and desired format. For a competitor briefing, name the companies, explain which changes matter and say where the summary should go. That makes the result easier to check and reduces ambiguity.

Ongoing work also raises a cost question. A subscription does not necessarily mean unlimited use, so check account limits and credit rules before scheduling frequent checks. Actual consumption will depend on the work requested.

Teammates extends the idea of Computer from one multi-step assignment to longer-running responsibilities. Its practical value will depend on the tasks, usage limits and reliability in each team's workflow.
