AI or Human on the Phone: What 14,000 Calls Showed

On October 15, Bold Agent Kit, a company that itself sells AI receptionists, published a comparison of about 14,000 inbound calls: 6,343 were handled by AI agents and about 7,657 by people. Human receptionists converted calls into leads about four times better, but an AI operator for inbound calls missed fewer of them. The data is internal and has not been independently verified, so it is too early to read it as a verdict on AI telephony.

What was measured

Bold Agent Kit compared three metrics for human receptionists and AI agents on the phone:

MetricResultWhat it means
Inbound call converted into a leadabout 4 times higher for peoplea person more often brings a call to a result, but the text gives no absolute rates: "4 times" could be 2% against 8% or 10% against 40%
Calls where the caller hung up without any progress700% higher for AI, which is roughly eight times as oftenthis is the main weakness of the AI agent in the sample: the conversation breaks off before it achieves anything
Missed calls15% more for peopleAI answers at any hour, while a person has shifts, breaks and overload: the company names this as AI's main advantage

Why this is not a verdict

The company itself writes that the result cannot be taken as proof that people beat AI in every industry. There are several reasons:

  • This is an observation, not an experiment. Calls were not randomly split between people and AI, and the mix of calls could differ: for example, AI could get the night-time and unusual requests.
  • Much is undisclosed. There is no time period, no way calls were assigned, no call complexity, no industries of the clients and no statistical significance.
  • We do not know which AI was on the line. The models and agent settings are not named, and voice models change fast: on October 14, for example, Grok Voice 3.0 came out, which leads one ranking of voice agents. A conclusion about one AI call center cannot be carried over to another.
  • The data is not published. The company collected it from its own clients, and nobody can check it.
  • The company has an interest. It sells AI receptionists. It is telling that the result came out against its own product, but it is still the company that words the conclusions.

What the labor market shows

At the same time the investment firm a16z published an October 9 analysis of Revelio data. After a decade of growth, call center employment worldwide turned down: in wealthy countries since 2022, and by the fourth quarter of 2025 growth is negative everywhere, including the poorest countries.

The authors see AI as the likely cause, because call centers were expected to be the first target for replacement. But the text gives no exact figures, they are only in the charts, and employment data cannot prove a cause. In the US unemployment has meanwhile been stable, which suggests former operators are finding work elsewhere.

What customers and analysts say

A recent Gartner study shows what callers themselves expect from AI. In a survey of 3,566 customers run in February and March 2026, 50% said interactions are easier with generative AI, but 87% said a company must keep a way to reach a human.

The same analysts predict that by 2027 half of the companies that planned to cut their support staff sharply will abandon those plans. In a March 2025 poll of 163 support leaders, 95% said they would keep human agents to define the role of AI.

What to count instead of "who is better"

The company advises counting the cost of a successful outcome, not the cost of an answered call. A system that is 80% cheaper to run can turn out unprofitable if it converts noticeably fewer calls into leads. This is an illustration from the text, not a calculation from the sample.

So the realistic option is a hybrid: AI takes night calls, routine questions and routing, and a person stays for the difficult cases. There is also an example where AI works with a person rather than instead of one: in a study by Brynjolfsson, Li and Raymond published by NBER and later in the QJE, an AI assistant for the operator sped up the work of 5,179 support agents by 14% in issues resolved per hour, and by 34% for newcomers.

What to check on your own

If you are thinking of putting an AI agent on the phone, do not rely on other people's numbers. Compare on your own calls, over one period and on the same types of requests:

  • how many leads you get per 100 calls;
  • how many calls end without any result;
  • how many calls are missed;
  • how much one successful lead costs, not one answered call.
